Every time I sit down to draft a blog post, I try to derive inspiration from the current happenings of life. With the extended Eid break in Dubai, life, as of this week, has been about spending time with the family, catching up on movies, some exercise and lots of lazing around. At the same time, it has been about PAIN. About painkillers. About alternating hot & cold packs. About rest. And that is what I plan to write about this time around.
Some statistics first.
- Millions of women are living in chronic pain.
- Women feel pain more intensely than men do.
- Neck, shoulder, back pain and migraine are the most common complaints when it comes to women.
As far as I’m concerned, I’ve always had an issue with my neck. At any given point in time, the muscles in my neck and shoulder feel tensed. Traditionally, a massage is supposed to help, however, in my case, it has an opposite effect resulting in heightened pain and dizziness. This pain is largely brought about by a) bad posture b) stress c) vigorous exercise causing strain in the neck muscles. Depending on the severity of pain, the course of treatment includes a combination of a) painkillers and muscle relaxants b) hot and cold packs c) neck exercises which need to be done consistently.
My point from all this gyan? It’s simple. As daughters, sisters, wives and mothers, women need to play a lot of roles. At times-individually; at others-all at once. Our plates are always full and yet we manage to accommodate that tad bit more. It would not be incorrect to say that the word ‘multitask’ was coined keeping us in mind.
And if we are this powerful a machinery, we should do everything in our capacity to keep us going. If you’ve been longing for that much needed me time, take it now. The doctor’s appointment that you’ve been postponing, go for it now. That book, perhaps? Put yourselves first. Address the pain. Breathe. Fall in love with taking care of yourself. Mind. Body. Spirit.
Easier said than done but I’m going to try. You?
